Women’s Retreat

A time away for rest, study, and fellowship

The first TPC Women’s Retreat was a local retreat in 2016, featuring Jennifer (Marshall) Patterson speaking on “Life Beyond the Milestones.” Our first away retreat was in 2024 at Shrine Mont Retreat Center in Orkney Springs, VA where we returned in 2025.

2025

Speaker: Allison Clapp

Topic: The Bruised Reed

Summary: Allison Clapp lead us through Richard Sibbes’s The Bruised Reed. In it, Sibbes expounds on Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus, the Servant of the Lord, showing how he provides tender care for those who are weak and struggling. We dipped our toes into the Puritans with this short and beautiful book. It’s available in a modern English version to make it more accessible.

Isaiah 42:3 – “A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.”

2024

Speaker: Christina Fox, author of A Heart Set Free: A Journey to Hope Through the Psalms of Lament.

Topic: The Psalms of Lament and Thanksgiving

Summary: Christina Fox spoke about how God comforts us through His Word, particularly through the psalms of lament and thanksgiving.

2016

Speaker: Jennifer (Marshall) Patterson

Topic: “Life Beyond the Milestones”

Summary: We tend to build our lives around milestones — graduating college, getting married, having children. A temptation is to focus our attention and self-worth on such milestones, gauging our success based on how we fulfill this schedule. Yet, most of our sanctification occurs between achieving these milestones, when we wait with uncertainty. Dr. Patterson spoke about the danger of making milestones our life’s focus, and how Christians are instead called to glorifying God in all they do.
