2015: Adult Sunday School: 2 Corinthians with Kevin Galloway

Taught by Kevin Galloway

This course will run through the spring (and maybe slightly beyond, depending how the pace goes). This letter to the Corinthian church is full of comfort (the word is used 10 times in the first chapter!) and helpful exhortation, and contains some striking and memorable pictures. We behold the glory of the Lord "with unveiled face", and are being "transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (3:18). Carrying this treasure "in jars of clay", we are "afflicted in every way, but not crushed" (4:7-8), knowing that we are being prepared for "an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" (4:17). The old has passed away, and we are "new creations", entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation (5:17-19). And in all this the Father glorifies the Son, reminding us that "He made [him] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (5:21) And that's just an appetizer of the kind of rich fare we'll find in this book!

The class will take an expository approach (covering approx 12-18 verses per week), and will focus on drawing out the pastoral aspects of the book, for our comfort, encouragement, and exhortation. The first session will cover 1:1-11, and we'll meet at 9:00 in the adult Sunday School classroom about 2/3 of the way down the hall. I hope you'll be able to attend! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

  • [03.22.2015] - Week 7 - 2 Corinthians 4
  • [03.29.2015] - Week 8 - 2 Corinthians 5. "For in this tent [i.e. body] we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling..." Some of us can greatly identify with this! It's not that the physical is bad and the spiritual is good, but that we long to be "further clothed" with our heavenly bodies. That day is coming, so we are full of "good courage"!
  • [04.05.2015] - Week 9
  • [04.12.2015] - Week 10
  • [04.19.2015] - Week 11
  • [04.26.2015] - Week 12 - 2 Corinthians 5:16-6:12, a wonderful picture of the fruits of the gospel ("a new creation" and reconciliation with God) as well as the way that the gospel goes out through us. Paul calls us God's ambassadors, the ones through whom God makes his appeal to sinners to be saved, and the urgency of the message causes us to implore others to be reconciled to God now, in this "day of salvation". Join us as we consider the implications for bringing the gospel to our neighbors and friends.
  • [05.03.2015] - Week 13 - 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:16.
  • [05.10.2015] - Week 14 - Final class.  We cover chapters 8 and 9 with their call to joyful giving. Paul was passionate about raising funds to send to the impoverished Jerusalem church, and his encouragement and exhortation to generosity is as relevant for us today as it was for the Corinthian church of the first century.
